I am trying to get my Korean War impression finished up, and had a quick question about helmet chinstraps for Korea. I have seen pictures of U.S. M1 helmets with the sewn on "WWII" style chinstraps, but I was wondering about the "clamp-on" style with the ball attachment, similar to what you see on vietnam helmets (I have an original front seam helmet that already has the clamp-on ball attachment chinstraps attached) Would this be correct for a Korean War impression? Thanks, Charles

I looked around at several sites, from diferent periods during the conflict and did not see any chinstraps with the "clips". I would assume from that, the clips were almost certainly a post-war item. If you find evidence to the contrary, please post it here, so we can all learn. Good luck with your impression, and when it's complete show us some pics!!

Thanks for the reply! I will likely go ahead and replace them then, as I want to portray the most common gear encountered in Korea. From what I can tell, the clip on type may have been used stateside later in the conflict, but I can't find too much evidence that they were used in Korea proper either ( no doubt attributable to millions of available wwii shells with chinstraps ready to go!). Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help! The chinstraps you described are correct but, the ones during Korea had the clips painted OD green instead of black.
