Yes, this is a type 56 (IIRC it says that on the reverse) It's used with the Ppsh-41, or PPS-43 and is nearly identical to the kind used during the war except for the 2 smaller "cleaning kit" pockets.
If you slice off those pockets and re-attach the shoulder strap, you'd be spot on.

I haven't seen any of the earlier magazine pouches for sale anywhere, ever, sad to say.
The only grenade pouches I've seen in photos is the 4 pocket style... Right now on ebay is a Chinese and a Vietnamese. I think the VN might be closer to originals, as I don't recall seeing the wood toggle in wartime photos... but either one would pass I think, since I'm sure there was some variation between makers.
The ammo bandoleer would be quite acceptable; used for any of the bolt action rifles.
As a side note, I haven't seen any canteens in any wartime pics, which leads me to believe they were carried in breadbags or other types of pouches rather than worn over the shoulder.

That's irritating. How do you tell Chinese/Vietnamese stuff apart? Am I right in thinking that the Chinese stuff is the ligher tan with the white insides?
On the subject of belts, I assume they would have been issued? Can these be found?
It may be that their webbing was chucked by their UN captors (for fear of hidden weapons), but most Chinese soldiers seem to have worn only a belt when in entrenched positions.
Thanks again for your help!

Chinese vs. Vietnamese... a big discussion. Briefly, a lot of Viet stuff was made by China. They then copied that style, using what materials they had. Early stuff is brownish, later is olive green. The differing shades of brown probably would have more to do with date of mfg. than which country produced it.
For grenade pouches, I think the earlier one would be without the toggle/flap and the later one would be with... not unlike the magazine pouches (later ones with kit pockets). For our purposes, at least from photos I recall (no top flap/toggle) I would use the Vietnamese or perhaps it's labeled as Japanese.
I think a Japanese army belt would work nicely for our purposes, or any heavy brown leather garrison-style belt.
