Does anyone know of a source that lists the gear, uniforms and accessories as carried by either USN or USAF pilots during the war? It seems that all I can find are photographic sources with little information or items restricted to just WWII.
Barring that, is it possible that "someone in the know" could make a list of the items used by either branch during their flights in the war?
I would be most appreciative of any help I can get!
Thanks,
- MM

Ahoy!
Well not a air expert, but I will toss this out there to get things started-
We have to remember that both Prop and jet driven aircraft were in use during the KW. So If in a jet a newer G-suit would have been worn, and if in a Propeller driven aircraft then a standard, perhaps even WW2 style suit could have been worn. Perhaps the big question is helmet- I think that a hard leather/fiber style helmet was now worn by all fighter jocks, add to this a pair of goggles and a 'boom' style mic.
Parachute harness was probably still the same for prop fighters and a different style for the F-86 Saber and related jet fighters.
Mae West was in use, and with it the sea dye marker, shark repellent, strobe light. A savvy aviator would also have a knife-probably a civilian hunting knife, or if USN a Kabar. M1911A1 or revolver, canteen, First Aid pouch, and of course hidden away a life raft with survival gear in it if ditching in the sea became a reality.
Add to this a clip board with maps, weather info, radio freqs, and mission info on it.
I am not going to venture on the subject of foot wear, any ideas out there?
Well this is a start, any one else?
Chuck
