You know what the black one looks like? A broken boot lace.
In Charleston for Vet's Day 2007, we did burlap helmet covers. Most our our guys used rubber bands or inner tubes but one didn't have any, so he and I made a "rope" by cutting a thin strand of burlap, twisting it up, and using it is a string to hold everything down. I think that may be what is up with the dude on the left.
As far as the presence of 30 rounders is concerned, youll have to ask around, but given the flaks, it'd say this is the fall of 51 at the earliest, and probably more like 52 or 53.

I'd agree with all of that, looks like a boot lace or similar. Note the 'Micky Mouse' boots aswell as the body armour which makes it later. 30rd mags were there to some degree from the start of the shooting. I thought in this case firstly that they were 15rd mags taped, at a slightly angle, but looking again I'm fairly sure they are 30rd mags because of the length they are sticking out of the weapon, the angle being accounted for by the angle change in the mags. Having them taped seems fairly common for patrolling, which I believe is what these lads are doing as you have 60rds available to hammer at someone before you scoot off quick-sharp, plus the magazines seem to have been around in larger numbers than suitable pouches to carry them. Wonder if the guy 2nd from right has his body armour on under his field jacket?

Hello there, not an answer I'm afraid but a great close up picture of Burlap covers, that helps me with my previous question! Cheers! Nigel
