I am working up a historical display for a Marine of the 1st Marine Division circa june 1953, who served in Korea with the 1st MarDiv from June 1950 to the end of 1951, when he got rotated back to the US. He would have been with the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade in the Perimeter, at Inchon, and would have participated in the march from Chosin, as well as the UN offensive of 1951. What ribbons would he have been entitled to based on this profile?

It depends on a few things. Yes he would have got the Korean War campaign ribbons and united nations service medal. He would more the likely have a good conduct medal. If he served in actual combat, he would have got a combat action ribbon. After that it gets kinda funny. As a marine, if he served in Japan at the out set of the war, he would have an navy occupation medal. Depends on if he enlisted before Dec. of 1945. If he did, he would have a ww2 victory medal. If the marine served in ww2 before, he could have any slew of ww2 campaign ribbons. Last but not least, the marine would have a national defense ribbon.
Hope this helps,
Sean

Korean War Service with at least 1 star, UN service in Korea medal, National Defense. Those are the basics.. As stated above, it depends on many things. He would have been authorised the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal before the Korean Service medal was developed. Any decorations for valo, number of awards, conduct medals, prior service medals..NOT the Combat Action ribbon.. It wasn't instituted until the 60's.. Many of the awards today didn't exist then.. There were the basic inter-branch awards of valor, then there were the few, and I DO mean FEW awards for non-combat time..I can give you a general list of approved awards for Korea if you like

Ahoy!
Sean you are correct, the CAR was approved in 1969, however, under Public Law 106-55, the CAR may be awarded retroactively to 07 December 1941.

Found this while I was looking for something else, helpfully colourised to make it easier for reenactors! Navy Presidential unit citation and below, National Defence, Korean Service and U.N. Service medals.
