Other pile cap oddities. As far as I know (qualifier), WW2 M1943 pile caps were made with rabbit fur. Post war ones were made with artificial pile. My M1943 pile cap has artificial pile, which would lend me to believe that it is postwar.
Now, despite the introduction of the MQ-1 and M1951 pile cap, the M1943 style with fur on the bill remained popular with the 7th Army stationed in Germany. I'm not sure when they stopped wearing them, but this is mentioned in Stanton's book on the Cold War era.

Hello, found your board, hoping for help. I am trying to find Korean War era, EM, summer Dress uniform info and/or patterns.Trying to get this for my step-father who served in Korea as a medic. Will need Staff Sergeant insignia, tie, belt, etc. If anyone can direct me in a good direction to pursue getting this together for him, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First was my m1951 pile cap. On the whole, the so called "goldenlite" stripes were not popular...except with the pile cap it seems. So I sewed on some sergeant stripes (by the Korean War rank system, sergeant was 3 and a rocker). Tom -- hate to regurgitate an old thread, but does anyone have any idea when this practice began? I'll refer to Stanton again -- I don't see any pics in his book of goldenlites used on pile cap bills before late 1951. I'm trying to put together a mid-war impression now, and am curious as to whether or not this was common or appropriate across the board, or if it was divisional/regimental specific? Y'all got me into this Korean War stuff and now I can't stop! I need a twelve-step program!

There was a brass and enamal rank badge made for hats as well as a brass and painted one. The former are brass with black enamel inlay. The ones I've seen have post back attatchment. The latter, are cruder looking. Between stripes show castmarks as do the backs. they are painted red between stripes and along the edges. They have a screw back like a hat badge. I always thought they were a USMC thing, but recently got one with an army grouping. This was further re-inforced by information from a 7th Div. vet who wore one on his helmet liner and another on his pile cap bill. They may be in country made. I don't have a lot of info on them other than they are Korean War vintage. My originals only have a set of wide Sfc stripes painted black with screw posts. I'll try to get pics posted.
