Sewed up a few things tonight, will post pictures tomorrow.
First was my m1951 pile cap. On the whole, the so called "goldenlite" stripes were not popular...except with the pile cap it seems. So I sewed on some sergeant stripes (by the Korean War rank system, sergeant was 3 and a rocker). I then also sewed on WW2 stripes onto my burlap helmet cover, a practice observable within the 40th division.

Our local surplus store usually has a few of the gold ones and occasionally WW2 style chevrons. I always find PFCs mixed in with all the modern crap. They don't know what they are, so they're like .50 or a dollar or something.

Very interesting. I need to find another sergeant chevron, because now I have a single one by itself.

It may be a while before I make it up there again, the car is in the shop. Seems like I usually see PFC or Corporal, but I can't think of why I'd be looking for Sgt.

I'm watching an auction for some stripes on e-bay, really cheap, but it requires a money order, which I hate doing...

I thought about starting a thread with a new question about the pile cap, but maybe it's better in this thread. I've been looking for a M1951 pile cap for my giant melon (7 3/4) and have had no luck. Are there any other caps that can be easily modified to m1951 spec? What about the European surplus pile caps I've seen on ebay often?

Hmmmm, dunno about that one. I've seen pile caps as big as 7 1/2, I'm sure with a lot of patience a 7 3/4 could be found.

Another question: Did the M1951 Pile Cap change at all before it went out of service? As in, if I find one from the later 50s, would it still be acceptable?

That is a very interesting question! I am not honestly sure. I know that M1951 field jackets from the late 1950s and early 1960s are labeled differently and list pattern dates that are post Korean War, indicating changes in pattern (but not sufficient to change the model). However, I have yet to figure out what these differences are, or if they make a difference for our purposes.

I am not sure if they changed, I do not think so. I have a MQ-1 cap which is slightly earlier than the 51 pile. I know it saw service early and well through most of the war, only real noticeable difference is the part between the bill and cap in the front is slightly larger.

The M-51 may have changed ever so slightly during production, may be more of a factory thing than an official change. If memory serves Abshire has a late production M-51, If I remember I'll take mine with me next time I see him.

I'm pretty sure my pile cap is an MQ-1, but I'd need to check the label again.

What time frame did the MQ-1 come out? When I see pics of guys in Nov-Dec 50 that look like they're wearing M-51 caps, is that what they have on?

Yes, that would be an MQ-1 cap.

The MQ-1 was adopted in 1948.

Cool. I knew there was a WW2 version of the pile cap with fuzz on the front of the bill, but wasn't familiar with the MQ-1. Was it issued to everyone as part of the winter gear package?

Seems to be issued to troops heading to "colder" climates. I know my uncle who was in the Air force was issued one also, so you don't have to be a ground pounder to get one.
