Does anyone know anything about ROK Rank insignia? In "Coldest War" they mention Marines wearing pin on rank insignia (that much we know they did), but the author (and his unit) are under the impression that these are South Korean rank badges. I think this is false, but I figured I'd check it out anyway.
It's interesting to know about this stuff and then read about things like that. They also mention getting new jackets with "fiberglass" linings, everyone fought over them until a rumor went around that the "fiberglass" would get into wounds and cause infections and other long-term problems, then they all refused to wear them (they weren't talking about flaks, he talks about getting those later). I'm thinking they're talking about pile liners, why they thought it was "fiberglass" is anyone's guess.

OK, I was watching a newsreel earlier and the ROK guys had the little chevrons painted on thier steel helmets. One guy had what looked like a big homemade "big red one" patch, like WW1 style, looked like it was safety pinned to his sleeve. They were crossing the Imjin in March or April of 51, I'm assuming they were 1st Div since they mentioned Paik Sun Yup whose book I've been meaning to read.

Bren, The liners with the weird white lining that you like the feel of, those are the "fiberglass" liners they are talking about. I don't know if they actually have fiberglass in them or not.
