On a more serious note, I can understand why it annoys you when your genuine interest with your army's/country's history is hijacked to the point where you are out priced on buying the gear

I personally find the phenomenon of youths in the 60's stumbling on these coats and making them an integral part of their scene very intriguing. Just imagine how many must have been snapped up back then, mathere must still be hundreds packed away in UK attics!

The first one doesn't look like a parka to me. It actually looks like a coat worn by an officer in the Stanton book I found on Google.
Any idea's what it is?

HAve to say that this one looks suspect to me....which models had the "US Army" label on the left breast? Certainly none of the classic one's I have saw

This is in Germany and is being called an M51. Liner looks very new to me, What do you guys think?

In order, the auctions are for a parka type overcoat, looks like it might be an M1951, but it could have an M65 liner inside it (looking at the tag). I've seen that before, but M1951s were made through the 1950s, and they went bag to tags after Korea The last one is a genuine M1951 parka, minus the attachable hood.

The M1951 auction, he has photos of the stamping on the liner. M1951 liners were mohair/frieze on one side, green nylon on the other. The nylon side is what goes towards your body, and is what is stamped. I have a 1951 or '52 dated liner that looks exactly like that one. So, if you have the money, and you want an M1951, jump on the last one!

Also, M1965 parkas are really nice parkas.

Our local surplus store has M-65 shells for $10, I think this is a big part of the reason that paying so much for an M-51 is so annoying. Even the Parka type overcoats are very reasonably priced.

I missed out on an M1950 overwhite parka the other week. Kind of glad now that I didn't bid higher though, looking at my budget. lol

Man I just passed on buying a big bundle of m51 parkas at a closing surplus store for 5 bucks each there were all sizes present and still all tied up in original bundles there had to be at lease 100 or more I'll try to reach they guy again.

I just saw this post...

As far as I'm aware, that style/design (cotton coat with removable liner)was introduced "post Korean War" 1956 if memory serves... I can't recall seeing that type in any photos of the 50-53 period; not that they were worn much "in country" in any case.

Officers were wearing that style since approximately mid-WWII however. And that's all I know.

I stand corrected... I just looked at a few auctions on ebay, and there were cotton o'coats with pattern dates of 1950. Therefore I would say that yes, they are KW acceptable, at least for the '51-'53 period. I know I've seen tags reading ... (postwar) patern date 1954/56??, so someone more familiar with the "differences" between these models might have more to say.

An old Marine I spoke with at my DAV post said he went through the Chosen campaign with just a field jacket (with liner/sweater/long john?) which I thought was incredible, but I have since seen a pic or two taken at Chosen, of men wearing only jackets, among others wearing parkas.

In WWII, I believe the designation was Officer's Overcoat Field, OD 7, so it's fine for WWII. Now I may be wrong, but I believe that in the post-war years, that pattern coat replaced the wool American greatcoat they'd been wearing in WWII.

In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the Fishtail parka didn't actually make it to Korean in any numbers until at least the late Winter of 1950, possibly even the spring or summer of '51. So actually, it's a good investment and actually more appropriate for an early war, winter of 1950 American impression than a parka, IMHO.

I understand that there were many "parkas" issued during that first winter as well. More so even than overcoats if I'm not mistaken at least for infantry units: a couple different types of WWII vintage, but also the M-1947 pattern overcoat-parka (which was I think the most common issue).

I've also seen picture of an M-1947 fishtail parka on ebay, but I'm not really sure if that's a correct description.

The parka they list is not Korean war. M-51's didnt have the fur on the front of the hood. Those listed are the Vietnam era ones. SG screwed this up too.
